Holiday Relay At Rizzo Fundraiser

The winter holiday season is a time to be spent with family, friends, and loved ones. It’s an opportunity to unwind from the hustle and bustle of every day life at the end of every year; time for self reflection of the year gone past and the look towards what lies ahead.

While the holiday tradition exists in almost every city and culture around the globe, it has a certain aura and special place right within the confines of South Philadelphia.

Philadelphia is a blue-collar city filled with a vast diversity of people and culture. We wear our hearts on our sleeves and take pride in our families, our neighborhoods, our work, our city, and ourselves.

Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society is an incredible organization with chapters existing all across the nation. The local Philadelphia Chapter is staffed with some of the most dedicated, hardworking, and genuine individuals that are always looking for ways to make a difference, involve the community, and give back to the causes they support through unique fundraising and causal event opportunities.

This holiday season, the Philadelphia Relay For Life chapter is teaming up with Broad Spectrum Sports, Philadelphia’s Most Comprehensive Sports Entertainment Network, to bring a fun, holiday themed event to the people of South Philadelphia in one of the areas most beloved venues.

The 1st Annual “Holiday Relay at Rizzo” in South Philly will be held at the oldest and proudest ice rink in Philadelphia: Rizzo Rink.

On Saturday, December 22nd from 7:30-9:30pm, Rizzo Rink will be transformed into a festive ice skate for families, friends, and loved ones right in our own backyard.

There will be a limited number of tickets available to the event due to the size of the venue, but there are several opportunities to get involved, whether or not you can make it on that day!

Two types of entry tickets will be pre-sold to the “Holiday Relay at Rizzo”. One for those who be lacing up the skates to get on the ice, and one for those who will be spectating, supervising, or simply enjoying the activities off the frozen surface.

Apparently Donovan McNabb Isn't the Only Player Clueless to Ties in the NFL

So instead of beating your head against your keyboard this Monday morning following yet another trainwreck Eagles loss, enjoy this read to take your mind off things temporarily. Instead of replacing the political sign on your lawn with a "Fire Andy" one, and before you hop right onto that Nick Foles bandwagon, take a moment to enjoy that despite Donovan McNabb's ignorance to the NFL tie a few years back, he is not alone.

Donovan now has a new activity to occupy his time that normally consists of him sitting at home thinking of ways to convince the football world of his relevance and deserved spot in the Hall of Fame; having a good laugh at his former coach's first 5 game losing streak of his career.

Well Mr. McNabb, you can also enjoy the fact that while the football world gasped and awed when you didn't know football games could end in a tie (and here in Philadelphia, we just *FACEPALMED* and shook our heads in embarrassment), your fellow NFLers didn't take note and learn from your mistake.

On Sunday, following a 24-24 tie between the St. Louis Rams and San Francisco 49ers, current Rams wideout and former Eagle Danny Amendola admitted to Peter King of Sports Illustrated that he was unaware that NFL games could end in a tie.

When McNabb made the famous blunder in 2008, Amendola was on the Eagles practice squad. I am not making this up.

And if it's any consolation, San Francisco safety Dashon Goldson was also unaware of the rules of his profession. "I didn't know you could tie. When I saw both sides walking onto the field, I was like 'Where's everybody going?'"

I guess I should have altered my intro to this article. Commence your keyboard head banging. Because think of how your boss would react if you publically admitted to not knowing the rules of how your company operated (hint: PINK SLIP).

Olympic Absence: Can Baseball Come Back?

As I sat down at the bar, enjoying a hand pumped IPA, I glanced up and noticed the Olympics were on television. The specific event was synchronized swimming. I was more than critical of this sport as, frankly, it looks pretty darn stupid (No offense to any synchronized swimmers out there). I felt as though this sport was invented for people who wanted to be dancers, but weren’t balanced enough, or wanted to swim, but weren’t fast enough.

I thought about all of the weird Olympic sports: Judo, Badminton, Table Tennis, Speedwalking, Trampolining and Equestrian. Then, I thought to myself, I can’t believe the International Olympic Committee (IOC) hates America so much by taking away baseball.

REPORT: Cliff Lee Pulled off Waivers By Phillies

Per Howard Eskin on Twitter, Cliff Lee has been removed from waivers by the Phillies according to CBS Sports.

What does that mean? A team claimed Lee and the Phillies could not work out a trade.

Buzz On Broad Radio 8/2: Getting to Know Ducks Forward (and Cherry Hill Native) Bobby Ryan

Last night, from approximately 10:00-10:50pm EST (yes, a full 50 minutes), Anaheim Ducks right winger Bobby Ryan was generous enough to call in to another installment of Buzz On Broad Radio featuring the crew from The Orange Update.

Danny Ricciardi along with @215cash, @feelgoodfrank, and @ebbonderr got to talk hockey, superstitions, hockey history, and the ties to Philadelphia with the Cherry Hill, NJ born and raised Ryan.

It was truly a professionally conducted interview, done more to allow our listeners and readers to get to learn about life as a professional athlete in the NHL, rather than to cross any lines that flirt with anything that would put Bobby in a compromising postition. 

However, Claude Giroux was the 1st non-Duck he mentioned as a player he would most like to play on a line with. And for what it's worth, he was born and raised with Philadelphia Flyers ties. He knows his hockey history in Philadelphia, was very close with Bobby Clarke growing up, and idolized guys like John LeClair growing up.

His favorite coach he's ever played for was Kevin Dineen and he even used to play pickup basketball with Paul Holmgren at the age of 15.

Bobby Ryan was about as classy and professional as it gets, and we guarantee you love the guy after listening to our interview.

We'd LOVE to have him here in Philadelphia. And we'd like to extend our biggest thanks to him for dedicating his time to give a radio spot to a few guys from his hometown. You can listen to the full length interview through the media player after the jump.

Iguodala's Defense Lifts Team USA to a Win

Team USA defeated Tunisia easily with a score of 110-63 on Tuesday night under the lights in London. Even though the ending margin is something spectacular, that wasn't the case for the majority of the game. 

With the starting 5 slacking, Tunisia saw many slight leads early in the 1st quarter of play. After Kobe Bryant began slacking on the defensive end of the ball, Coach Mike Krzyzewski made a few changes. The second line of Team USA's squad seemed to be the difference maker and take top it off, The Philadelphia 76ers' Andre Iguodala made his presence felt.

After starting the game with a couple of emphatic tip-slams and resiliant perimeter defense, the Americans started a 24-2 run that started at the end of the 2nd and ended in the middle of the 3rd quarter. As usual, Iggy was a stat sheet stuffer. He finished with 6 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 5 assists while shooting 75% from the floor in 20 minutes of play.

Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant both added huge points to the effort, Durant had a double-double (13 points and 10 rebounds) and Anthony shot perfect from the floor finishing with 16 points. Kevin Love also added 16 points, including a couple of 3-point shots to the effort.

As long as Iguodala and the second line off the bench keeps bringing the lockdown defense and a barrage of 3-point shots, there's no team in the world that can match up better than Team USA.

Philadelphia 76ers Sign Guard Maalik Wayns

They say homecomings are sweeter than a good cheesesteak...wait maybe that's just a Philadelphia phrase.

Regardless, Maalik Wayns, former star guard at Roman Catholic High School (rival of my alma mater St. Joe's Prep) and standout at Villanova University, is set to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers and stay in the city he's played in for his entire career thus far. 

After working out with the Golden State Warriors and Orlando Magic in the Orlando Summer League, Wayns wasn't drafted  just as scouts believed of him and his Philadelphia counterpart, prospect Scoop Jardine.

If reports are true he will be on the team, whether in the NBA or in the NBA D-League, for at least one season while making more than $473,000.

Without the play of Xavier Silas due to injury, and a let down in the summer league from Penn standout, Zach Rosen, the Sixers signed Royal Ivey to provide a defensive lift off the bench and mentor the young Jrue Holiday. 

With majority of the active roster already decided, Wayns will need to beat former Kansas State standout Jacob Pullen if he wants to stay on an NBA roster.

In his junior season at Villanova University, Wayns averaged 17.6 points, 4.6 assists amd 3.8 rebounds per game and nearly 90 percent from the line while shooting over 41 percent from the field.

No matter the outcome the young guard's dream of making an NBA roster has finally been realized. Kudos kid you deserve it.

Sixers Sign Savior; Guard Royal Ivey

Now before we gawk at the over ambitious title just hear me out. The Philadelphia 76ers announced today that they have signed free agent guard Royal Ivey.  Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed as of yet.

The reason Ivey is so essential to this team isn't for his offensive skill set (you know since he has none as of yet) but it's mainly for his filling of the depth chart behind Jrue Holiday and his defensive presence. 

With guard, Jrue Holiday, becoming a superstar in the making, he needs to be pushed in practice. Enter his practice buddy and defensively skilled partner Royal Ivey. After two seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Ivey has playoff experience in big games and brings more a different variety of fortitude to the table.

Ivey (6-4, 215), the former Texas Longhorn and Harlem, NY native, was originally the 37th overall pick by Atlanta in the 2004 NBA Draft. After venturing around the league to different teams this will be his second stint with the 76ers.

In eight seasons, Ivey has appeared in 437 games with 109 starts, averaging 3.4 points, 1.1 assists and 1.1 rebounds, and shooting 40% from the floor in 12.5 minutes per game.

The 76ers Might Have Some Work Ahead

With the signing of numerous free agents this off-season, the Philadelphia 76ers have become a frightening team in the Eastern Conference of the NBA. 

The 76ers added guards Royal Ivey and Nick Young to the roster to add depth to the backcourt and a shooting presence behind Evan Turner and Jrue Holiday. 

As far as the frontcourt goes, the 76ers signed rookiesArnett Moultrie & Maurice Harkless to multi-year contracts to give the starting big men some depth up front. Also former Temple forward, Lavoy Allen, was also re-signed to a longer deal to add some diversity to the post as well.

The problems going forward are the overstocking done at the wing position and the general direction the team is going in. At the wing position, the 76ers have forward Dorell Wright (acqired via trade), "Moe" Harkless, Thaddeus Young and let's not forget our current olympian Andre Iguodala.

The Flyers currently have the 20th overall pick in the first round.
