Full Holiday Weekend Roundup

While you were all out shopping (hopefully everyone stayed safe), the holiday weekend was a pretty big weekend in Philly sports.  Between the Sixers weekend game, Operation Hat trick, and the Eagles, there is plenty I'm sure you missed. Here is a quick wrap-up from the holiday weekend:

Sixers Weekend

On Saturday night, the Sixers tipped off against the Oklahoma City Thunder.  The Sixers were defeated 116-109, with a strong performance by Thad Young, as well as Evan Turner. In the loss, Thad registered a team high 29 points, with 15 rebounds (6 OFF, 9 DEF) and 4 assists. While Turner dropped 29 points, with 5 rebounds and 4 assists.  The Sixers played a strong game, but couldn't handle Kevin Durant and the Thunder. Durantula led the OKC with 37 points, while his partner in crime, Russel Westbrook dropped 30 points.

On Sunday night, the Sixers defeated the Phoenix Sunds in a nail biter, 104-101.  Sunday's game showed that Sixers Jrue Holiday is a star in the making.  Jrue registered a career high 33 point performance and added 13 helpers.  

The Sixers hit the court on Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Center to tip-off against the Dallas Mavericks at 7:00pm. (CSN, 97.5 Fanatic)

Holiday Relay At Rizzo Fundraiser

The winter holiday season is a time to be spent with family, friends, and loved ones. It’s an opportunity to unwind from the hustle and bustle of every day life at the end of every year; time for self reflection of the year gone past and the look towards what lies ahead.

While the holiday tradition exists in almost every city and culture around the globe, it has a certain aura and special place right within the confines of South Philadelphia.

Philadelphia is a blue-collar city filled with a vast diversity of people and culture. We wear our hearts on our sleeves and take pride in our families, our neighborhoods, our work, our city, and ourselves.

Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society is an incredible organization with chapters existing all across the nation. The local Philadelphia Chapter is staffed with some of the most dedicated, hardworking, and genuine individuals that are always looking for ways to make a difference, involve the community, and give back to the causes they support through unique fundraising and causal event opportunities.

This holiday season, the Philadelphia Relay For Life chapter is teaming up with Broad Spectrum Sports, Philadelphia’s Most Comprehensive Sports Entertainment Network, to bring a fun, holiday themed event to the people of South Philadelphia in one of the areas most beloved venues.

The 1st Annual “Holiday Relay at Rizzo” in South Philly will be held at the oldest and proudest ice rink in Philadelphia: Rizzo Rink.

On Saturday, December 22nd from 7:30-9:30pm, Rizzo Rink will be transformed into a festive ice skate for families, friends, and loved ones right in our own backyard.

There will be a limited number of tickets available to the event due to the size of the venue, but there are several opportunities to get involved, whether or not you can make it on that day!

Two types of entry tickets will be pre-sold to the “Holiday Relay at Rizzo”. One for those who be lacing up the skates to get on the ice, and one for those who will be spectating, supervising, or simply enjoying the activities off the frozen surface.

Bynum Looks Like the Biggest Thing Since South Street

Well let the fanfare begin.

Big man Andrew Bynum is coming to the Wells Fargo Center this fall season. At 1:32 p.m. this afternoon, the NBA finalized the trade between the Orlando Magic, Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers that will bring not only Bynum to the 76ers but also veteran guard Jason Richardson.

For those of you who don't know Bynum has been and will continue to be one of the most dominant big men in the NBA. He's averaged double-double numbers playing with the Lakers in 2 separate seasons (2007-2008 & 2011-2012) and averaged 18.7 points per game and 11.8 rebounds per game last season while adding two blocks.

He will most likely become the focal point in terms of offense for the 76ers along with Jrue Holiday and Nick Young off the bench. Bynum is a perennial All-Star that will bring a shine to the Sixers frontcourt that hasn't been seen in years.

The 76ers have also grabbed the veteran Jason Richardson from the Orlando Magic in the trade. J-Rich is also a very good trade for the 76ers bench or starting line. The 31 yeard old former Spartan from Michigan State averages 17.5 points per game while shooting 37.2 percent from beyond the arc and 44.1 percent from the floor in 805 career outings in 34.6 minutes.

If anything, expect the 76ers to be a force from anywhere on the floor this year. They're playing with an amazing starting 5 (no matter who they select) and they're bench players provide tremendous depth. 

The Eastern Conference Finals suddenly don't look so distant.
