PHILADELPHIA, PA. – JANUARY 8, 2013 – The Philadelphia 76ers announced Tuesday that they have signed free agent guard Maalik Wayns to a 10-day contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, per team regulations.
Wayns (6-1, 195), a former standout at Roman Catholic High School, was not selected in the 2012 NBA Draft following his junior season with Villanova. He originally signed as a free agent with the Sixers on July 31 and was waived on January 6.
In 20 games for the Sixers this season, Wayns is averaging 2.5 points and 1.0 assists in 7.8 minutes per game.
As a cheaper contract solution for the Sixers, waiving Wayns and then picking him back up off of waivers is a more frugal option. A move the Sixers needed to make earlier in the season.
Looking at the problems at point-guard for the 76ers, there needs to be some form of change. When the point guard situation is All-Star caliber quality in terms of Jrue Holiday and prospect level quality when looking at Royal Ivey and Wayns, something needs to be done.
Whether it's a free agent or a trade option, there needs to be a more useful back-up point guard for the 76ers if they have hopes of winning more games.
But then again, if you're a guard, why really fight for 10 minutes per game when Jrue isn't playing?
