Philadelphia Eagles fans love Quarterback controversies, and there's no way around that. No one knows why, we just do. It might be because we're just infatuated with the idea of change, which would explain fans tracking Gus Bradley's plane across the country, hopping on the "Gus Bus" and then subsequently realizing they actually have no idea who he is.
Whether it's Donovan Mcnabb, Jeff Garcia, Kevin Kolb, Michael Vick or Nick Foles, there's always something Eagles fans want more. And, now that Chip Kelly is in town yet another decision on the Quarterback is coming.
But, that decision isn't coming for some time. The only decision in plain view is on Michael Vick's future, because if he's going to be cut it has to happen within three days of the Superbowl(February 6th), and considering his comments on his teammates this season and his future, the chances of him being an Eagle next year are pretty much zero.
While listening to reports out of the Senior Bowl this week and again becoming enamored with figures they don't really know anything about (E.J. Manuel, Ryan Nassib, etc.), Philadelphians need to keep a couple things in mind: the draft isn't until April 25th, three months from now, and Chip Kelly isn't making a decision on quarterback until he sees all of his options practice and play with the team during training camp, in July, six months from now. However, everyone seems to be forgetting about this and expecting Kelly to call a press conference any day now to announce that he has made a decision. And, even though its a virtual certainty a quarterback will be drafted in April, the coaching staff will want competition during camp.
Under Andy Reid, ten different quarterbacks started games: Donovan Mcnabb, Doug Pederson, Koy Detmer, A.J. Feeley, Mike McMahon, Jeff Garcia, Kevin Kolb, Michael Vick, Vince Young and Nick Foles. Of these ten quarterbacks, four were actually a part of a specific quarterback controversy. During these controversies, all of the decisions on who would be the starter were made midseason or during training camp.
*Week 2, 2009 season, Kolb got his first career NFL start in replacement of an injured Mcnabb. He would also start in week 3, and express desire to start midseason, prior to Mcnabb being traded. Although Mcnabb wasn't traded until April, it was expected that Kolb would be the "quarterback of the future".
*Week 1, 2010 season, Kolb goes down with an injury against Green Bay and Vick finishes the game and starts during Week 2. Following a Week 2 victory behind Vick, Andy Reid named Vick starting quarterback for the remainder of the season regardless of Kolb's health.
*Week 10, 2012 season, Foles replaces Vick following a first quarter injury against Dallas. Following Week 13, Andy Reid names Foles starting quarterback for the remainder of the season, regardless of Vick's health.
So, while you're waiting on pins and needles in mid-January for a quarterback decision, remind yourself you'll be waiting for quite a while. No decision is coming any time soon. Though we don't know much about how Chip Kelly will handle this pivotal decision, we can assume he will take his time. The future of the franchise hinges on this decision.
