Hurricane Sandy Couldn't Even Stop Spencer

The Philadelphia 76ers cruise to a 84-75 win over the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night at the Wells Fargo Center, but the point of emphasis was on a storm tonight, no not Hurricane Sandy but a 7-foot storm by the name of Spencer Hawes.

Hawes played phenomenally Wednesday night as he poured in double-double numbers (16 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 blocks) while shooting 66 percent from the three-point-line.

"We've been waiting a while for this," says the former Washington Husky, Spencer Hawes, "it's been a long summer and this is what we've been waiting for."

Hawes played 31 minutes in place of the injured Andrew Bynum, and proved he deserved to be in a Doug Collins rotation with a strong performance off the bench to lead to the first win of the season for the Sixers.

Among other players on the floor, Jrue Holiday finished with a double-double performance (14 points & 11 assists) and Dorell Wright also delivered with a strong 14 points off the bench. The Sixers also shot 81 percent from the charity stripe as they sunk 17 for 21 shots from the free-throw-line.

With the season underway, Coach Doug Collins may have another piece to play with among great players from a strong Sixers bench.

I don't know what's bigger, Hurricane Sandy or Hurricane Hawes.

Time For The Sixers To Take Back Philadelphia

October in Philadelphia is prime time for the four major sports teams.  Usually the Phillies October playoff run just ended, the Eagles are in the midst of their season, the Flyers are just underway, and the Sixers begin their season.  This year is different, completely different.  The 2012 Phillies did not make the postseason, the Flyers are in the midst of yet another lockout, and the Eagles are like a car accident, you don't want to look, yet you can't look away.  So where does that leave the 76ers?

If you asked the average Philadelphia sports fan to rank their four major teams, the Sixers are 9 out of 10 times the last team.  Not because people dislike basketball, but because they are usually overshadowed by the Flyers or Eagles.  Since making the finals with Allen Iverson in 2001, the Sixers have never seemed to get their groove back.  The fans and the organization just hasn't been the same. 

After last season's playoff run, as the Sixers upset the Chicago Bulls, and lost to the Boston Celtics, fans started coming back.  This young, fast Sixers team had something that the city has been missing.  In the offseason, the Sixers traded away their top player in Andre Iguodala, and signed several talented shooters. Not only to they improve their roster, but they also traded for Andrew Bynum, a 24 year old, 7'0 Center, and two time dunk contest champion Jason Richardson. Although Bynum's knees aren't healthy enough to play right now, the Sixers are taking the necessary steps to get him back at 100%. 

Tonight the Sixers tip-off their 50th season, with a whole new look, as well as the young, returning talent. The team will also unveil their brand new Blue alternate jerseys. In the unfortunate situation of the other three sports teams in Philadelphia, this could be when the Sixers get their fan base back.  Philadelphia has a reason to be excited about this team.  Maybe they aren't quite ready to make it to the NBA Finals, that we will have to wait and see, but they will be exciting to watch.  Are you ready Philly?

Andre Iguodala Thanks Philadelphia And The Fans

The Philadelphia 76ers tip-off their 50th season tonight at the Wells Fargo Center at 7:00pm versus the Denver Nuggets.  Tonight's game also marks the first regular season for former Sixer Andre Iguodala as a Nugget.  Coincidentally, Iggy's first game is against the team that drafted him, the Philadelphia 76ers.  

Iguodala was always viewed harshly in Philadelphia.  Fans and the organization looked to him to be the star player on the team, but Andre's play style wasn't meant for that.  The fans always got on Iguodala which led to his comments a week ago saying how hard it is to play in Philadelphia.

The Sixers organization will honor Iguodala with a short video some time during the first quarter. The video will be based around this, according to Adam Aron:

Through thick and thin, Andre Iguodala posted a letter to Philadelphia on his website, here is what the former Sixer had to say to us:

I would like to take the time to thank you and all your devoted sports fans for the passion, loyalty and spirit that you gave to me during my eight seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Thanks as well to the 76ers organization, who gave me the opportunity to fulfill my lifelong dream of playing in the NBA and provided me with a great front office of dedicated people to work with. I would also like to thank all the coaches, trainers and teammates that I was blessed to compete along side and build lasting relationships with here.

Tonight I begin a new chapter in my career but I will always share my accomplishments with the city and the organization and I thank you both for all that you have done for me.

Poor Offensive Line Play and Awful Officiating Doom Penn State

Andrew Bynum Begins Light Conditioning

As we all know, the Philadelphia 76ers want to take every precautionary step possible for their newest Sixer Andrew Bynum.  The young center has a bone bruise on his right knee, and will take his time getting back into the lineup.  

The Sixers have announced, per a press release that Bynum has started light condition.  The conditioning is considered low impact condition, which he will then be re-evaluated on a regular basis by the medical personnel.

General manager Tony DiLeo had this to say about Andrew Byum and the new look Sixers:

“With the team’s intriguing play in the pre-season leading to a 6-1 pre-season record, we are confident that the 76ers will be an exciting, talented and highly competitive team from day one. When Andrew Bynum rejoins for game play, that will take an already strong team to an even higher level.”

The Sixers start their regular season tomorrow night at the Wells Fargo Center as they tip-off against Andre Iguodala and the Denver Nuggets at 7:00pm.

Phillies Pick Up Option On Ruiz

According to Ryan Lawrence of the Daily News, the Phillies have exercised the 2013 option on Carlos Ruiz. The option is worth $5 million.

Next year the Phillies look to turn things around, their catcher will be a key reason why they do.

Eskin Reports QB Change

According to several tweets from Fox 29's Howard Eskin, the Eagles will make a quarterback change.  Eskin tweeted:

"#eagles Andy Reid met with coaches after game on sunday to discuss QB situation.  Meet again Mon Morn. I'm told likely QB change to Foles."

"I'm told Vick made 2 bad audible mistakes on calls and has same problem each wk.  Reid leaning 2 change at QB bcause Vicl not getting better"

 

 

Asante Samuel: "Dat Big Belly"

For the last 13 years, especially the last 2, Eagles fans have been calling for head coach Andy Reid to be fired. After Sunday's painful loss to the Atlanta Falcons, the former Eagle Asante Samuel had some strong words.

NHL Flushes Away November

In what seems to be a weekly thing now, the NHL flushed some more games away.  Today the NHL announced the cancellations of all game through November 30th.  In the cancellation, the Flyers now have officially lost 22 games in their season.

All games through and including November 30th have been cancelled.  As the season "progresses", the next question will be the cancellation of the Winter Classic or the All-Star Game.
