Many of you out there in Philadelphia are finding yourselves lost without October baseball. However, I decided to help you all remain interested in baseball throughout October by giving you some Phillie-friendly rooting interests for this fall edition of the Major League Baseball Playoffs.
Wild Card Round
National League – St. Louis Cardinals at Atlanta Braves – This one is easy. Obviously you root for the Braves. Yes I did just say that. Recent history always trumps everything else. And the stupid Cardinals with their World Series patch STILL on their arms (Seriously at some point in like August you need to take it off and focus on this year) need to lose. Also when you think about it, we screwed Atlanta over last year, St. Louis screwed us over, so its only natural to want the Braves to screw over the Cardinals.
Plus against the Nationals (who the winner of this game will match up against) went 4-3 against the Cardinals this year with 43 runs scored to the Cardinals 40. A pretty even matchup of teams no one should want to see win. The Nationals went 10-8 against the Braves this year with 83 runs scored to Atlanta’s 69. However, Stephen Strasburg won 3 games against the Braves this year only allowing 5 runs while in the games Strasburg won, the Nats had enough Natitude (still so awful) to score 14 runs. With Strasburg out, it would seem the Braves have a better chance to beat the Nationals than the Cardinals, as Strasburg only pitched once against the Cardinals and did not factor in the decision.
As Phillies fans after the whole “Take Back the Park Initiative” and the strong hate and resentment the Nationals have for us, I think its safe to say that NO one wants the Nationals to go very far. So bottom line, you should be rooting for the ATLANTA BRAVES.
American League – Baltimore Orioles at Texas Rangers – Baltimore hasn’t been to the postseason since the late 90’s. Baltimore has always felt like the American League “mini” version of the Phillies. Most Phillies fans will say they like Baltimore; the stadium is nice, the Inner Harbor is fun and moreover they are going up against a New York team 18 times a year and Philly hates everything from New York (well except Seinfeld). Also Baltimore is a fun story because of how good they are with such a small payroll.
Baltimore had a 9-9 record with 92 runs scored against the Yankees and 90 runs against. The Rangers were 3-4 against the Yankees with 27 runs scored and 30 runs against. Texas also went 1-3 in New York, being outscored 14-4 in the three loses. Plus when you have a battle of division rivals in the playoffs it is always more interesting, which is why you should root for the BALTIMORE ORIOLES.
Stay tuned tomorrow as I will take you in depth on the divisional round of the MLB playoffs.
