The Phillies' bats were relatively silent up until the top of the fifth inning, while trailing 1-0 due to Jay Bruce's 30th home run of the season in the second inning. After Steven Lerud and Tyler Cloyd's two-out singles, Jimmy Rollins made Johnny Cueto pay by sending his 17th home run of the season out of the ballpark. That would be Rollins' 1,999th hit of his career, and Cloyd's first career hit in the very same inning. Baseball.

An inning later, John Mayberry took Cueto deep to left field for his 14th home run of the season, improving the Phillies' lead to three runs. Today would be just the second time this season the right-hander has allowed two home runs in the same game. The other occurence for the Reds' ace came on August 2nd, against the San Diego Padres.

Tyler Cloyd pitched very well today considering the circumstances of it being his second career start and the type of game that occurred yesterday evening. Oh, and don't forget his opposition, 17-game winner, Johnny Cueto. He lasted seven strong innings today on 107 pitches (71 of them for strikes), allowing just one run and walking none on four hits. He struck out six different batters in the Reds starting lineup (nine total).

Phillies' RHP Justin De Fratus came in during the 8th inning for his 2012 debut. He walked one batter, but was able to retire the side without allowing a Red to cross the plate. RHP Phillippe Aumont recorded his first career save in the ninth to secure the victory. He was 15-for-18 in save opportunities with Lehigh Valley this season.

In roster news, a few IronPigs will join the Phillies roster sometime this month: manager Ryne Sandberg, pitching coach Rod Nichols and infielder Pete Orr.

Kyle Kendrick (8-9) takes the mound in the second game of the series against former Padre, Mat Latos (11-4). Latos last faced the Phillies on July 23rd of last season, where he got the no-decision after allowing three runs and five hits over six innings of work. Kendrick last started against the Reds on July 8th of 2010, however he did make a relief appearance against them in 2011. He allowed only one run in six and two-thirds innings of work.
