Waiting seems to be a common theme this off-season, and the Shane Doan situation doesn't wander off of the trail.
The date September 15 not only is of great importance to the National Hockey League, but now appears to be the deadline for Doan's decision, according to the Arizona Republic.
"Shane is going to sign a contract before the CBA expires on the 15th", said Doan's agent, Terry Bross.
"(Ownership has to) be done before the 15th, otherwise we're signing somewhere because we don't know what the new CBA is going to look like, and I don't know if it's going to limit any scope of a contract, so we want to make sure we sign before than".
"I guess from that respect, time is ticking", Bross went on to say.
The same source reports that Doan has gained interest from 16 teams across the league and that 6 of them have issued official offers.
Shane Doan, 35, is seeking a four-year contract and it is believed that he will make somewhere in the neighborhood of $7 million per year.
The latest offer to Doan is from Buffalo, and is 4 years / $30M. You can assume that the Coyotes also made an offer to bring back their captain, and it is rumored that Vancouver has an offer on the table as well. The other teams remain a mystery.
Shane Doan was in Philadelphia to meet with Flyers executives on July 21. He only met with three teams: Flyers, Rangers, and Canucks. Terry Bross told me that Shane had a "very good visit there [Philadelphia]".
A few weeks ago, it was rumored that Doan and his agent had shortened the list to three teams. The list did not include the Flyers, but did include Pittsburgh, New York (Rangers), and Vancouver. Unconvinced of the credibility of the report, I personally emailed Doan's agent.
"Flyers very much in the mix, don't believe everything you read", Terry Bross told me.
Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren confirmed his interest in Doan in a conference call, but like most hockey fans, believes he will remain in Phoenix. Should he choose to go elsewhere, the Flyers will pursue him.
