With the injury bug finding its way into the Flyers locker room over the past week or so, the team was forced to make some moves before their upcoming game in Buffalo on Wednesday night.
Danny Briere, Matt Read, and Chris Pronger have all been ruled out of tomorrow’s game. Briere, Read, and Zac Rinaldo have all suffered undisclosed upper-body injuries, and Rinaldo is a game-time decision.
Captain Chris Pronger was placed on 7-day injured reserve, a move that is retroactive to last Tuesday. This obviously means that Pronger is available to come off IR whenever he is ready, which should be in a week or so. After a visit with an eye-doctor today, reports are that Pronger could begin individual skating workouts sometime in the next few days.
The Flyers have also sent struggling defenseman Matt Walker to the Adirondack Phantoms. Walker did not have to clear waivers, as he was eligible to be sent down until November 4th by clearing waivers a few weeks ago.
With the two moves, the Flyers have opened up enough cap and roster space to bring up Harry Zolnierczyk and Ben Holmstrom from Adirondack. Holmstrom is a 6’ 1” center who has four assists and 20 penalty minutes in eight games with the Phantoms this season.
Zolnierczyk, who scored his first career NHL goal earlier this season in the Flyers’ 7-2 pounding of the Ottawa Senators, has a total of 9 points (5 goals, 4 assists) in just 10 games for the Phantoms this season.
