Let’s hope this injury isn’t as severe as any last season.
The Flyers’ captain was hit in the face with a Mikhail Grabovski follow through right near his eye and immediately skated off the ice. Pronger left behind his gloves and stick and ran to the dressing room with 8:03 left in the first period and didn’t return to the bench for the rest of the period.
No penalty was called on the play.
If Pronger took the stick to the eye, the injury could be serious. However, it looked like the veteran was holding his face below his eye, which may indicate a cut that needs stitches.
Matt Read was on the receiving end of a Joffrey Lupul high-stick just a few moments later and the video feed captured what appeared to be teeth flying out of the rookies’ mouth. A 4-minute double minor was called on Lupul as Read ran to the locker room in the same fashion that Pronger did. Read would return to action a few minutes later.
UPDATE: TSN's Bob McKenzie reported that Pronger will see an eye specialist.
Howard Eskin also said that Pronger should be "ok."
We'll keep you updated with anything new.
